Frequently Asked Questions

The questions we are asked most often, about working with us and about each of our services. If yours is not here, just ask — we are happy to explain.

General Questions

Do I need to be local to work with you?

No. We support clients regardless of their location, offering flexible accounting and tax services tailored to individual needs. Our services can be provided remotely or through other suitable arrangements, depending on your requirements.

I’m switching from another accountant — is that difficult?

It is a routine process. Once you appoint us, we write to your previous accountant for the information we need and get you set up with HMRC. Get in touch and we will talk you through it.

How do I send you my paperwork?

Our cloud-based approach makes it easier to manage documents, records and accounting information securely — so you can send things digitally from wherever you are.

Can you help if I have fallen behind or missed a deadline?

Yes. Get in touch as soon as you can and tell us where things stand. We will help you work out what needs to be brought up to date and deal with HMRC where necessary.

What does it cost?

It depends on what you need — the size of your business, which services you want and how your records are kept. Tell us about your situation and we will give you a clear quote before any work starts.

Can I ask questions during the year, or only at year end?

Whenever you need us. Need help throughout the year? We are here whenever you need us — that is part of the service, not an extra.

What are your opening hours?

Monday to Friday, 09:00 to 17:00. Outside those hours, send an enquiry or a WhatsApp message and we will come back to you on the next working day.

How do I become a client?

Send us an enquiry or call. We will talk through what you need, agree a fee, and then handle the authorisations with HMRC so we can act for you.

Accounting & Bookkeeping

How do I get my paperwork to you?

Digitally, from wherever you are. Our cloud-based approach makes it easier to manage documents, records and accounting information securely.

My records are a mess — is that a problem?

No. Spreadsheets, software or a folder of receipts — we have seen it before and can work with it. Tell us what state things are in and we will give you a realistic quote.

How often will I see figures?

That is up to you. Some clients only need annual accounts; others want management accounts monthly or quarterly so they can watch performance during the year.

Tax Services

When is my Self Assessment due?

The online filing deadline is 31 January after the end of the tax year, with payment due the same day. We work well ahead of that so you know the figure in good time.

I have not filed for a couple of years. Can you help?

Yes. Get in touch and tell us where things stand. We will work out what needs bringing up to date and deal with HMRC where necessary.

Will you deal with HMRC for me?

Yes. Once you authorise us as your agent we can correspond with HMRC on your behalf.

VAT Services

Do I have to register for VAT?

It depends on your turnover over a rolling twelve months and on what you sell. We will check where you stand and tell you whether registration is required or simply worth considering.

What is Making Tax Digital for VAT?

It means VAT records must be kept digitally and returns filed through compatible software, with a digital link between the two. We set that up and run it for you.

Can you take over an existing VAT registration?

Yes. Once you authorise us as your agent we can prepare and file your returns from the next period onwards.

Payroll Services

How small can a payroll be?

One person is fine — a single director payroll is one of the most common things we run.

What do you need from me each period?

Hours or salary changes, any new starters or leavers, and anything unusual such as statutory pay. We handle the rest.

Do you handle pensions?

Yes. We assess your staff each period, calculate contributions and produce the data your pension provider needs.

Self-Employed Services

I have just started trading. What do I need to do?

Register with HMRC, start keeping records of income and expenses, and put money aside for tax. We will walk you through all three and handle the registration.

What can I claim as an expense?

Costs incurred wholly and exclusively for the business — and there is more nuance to that than it sounds. We will go through your situation and tell you what will stand up.

Should I become a limited company?

Sometimes it helps and sometimes it does not. It depends on your profits, your plans and how you take money out. We will talk it through with your actual figures.

Limited Company Services

What are my deadlines as a director?

Accounts and a confirmation statement at Companies House, a Corporation Tax return and payment at HMRC, plus payroll and VAT if they apply. We track all of them for you.

Can you form the company for me?

Yes. We handle the incorporation, the share structure and the registrations that follow.

Salary or dividends?

It depends on your profits and your personal position. We will run the numbers for your circumstances rather than applying a rule of thumb.

CIS Services

Do I need to register for CIS?

If you pay subcontractors for construction work, or you are paid as a subcontractor, then generally yes. We will confirm which side you fall on and register you.

When are CIS returns due?

Monthly, by the 19th following the end of the tax month. We prepare and file them for you.

Can I get my CIS deductions back?

Deductions taken from you are credited against your tax. We make sure they are properly claimed through your Self Assessment or company return.

Business Support

Is this only for larger businesses?

No. A sole trader with one van benefits from a cash flow forecast just as much as a company with staff.

How often should we review the figures?

Quarterly suits most small businesses. Monthly makes sense if things are changing quickly or cash is tight.

Do you charge for questions during the year?

Ongoing support is part of how we work, not an extra. Need help throughout the year? We are here whenever you need us.
